Simply put, The Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans institution.  Formed in 1983 by the now infamous Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world.  Rebirth is committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands white at the same time incorporating modern music into their show.  Their signature brand of brass funk has won over several generations of music lovers, and in a post-Katrina world, their name and music have become the soundtrack to their musically rich hometown.  In the wake of the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

What started as a side project in 2003 has become regarded as the future of New Orleans funk. With a direct lineage to The Meters and The Neville Brothers, combined with members who have shared the stage with Dave Matthews, Trey Anastasio, Etta James and Harry Connick Jr. (just to name a few), Dumpstaphunk is a recipe for creating a new standard for an entire genre.

Dumpstaphunk’s groove is a unique monster. It’s not the minimalist funk of the Meters though the band can lock in like that quartet. It’s not the relentless funk of James Brown, but it has that rhythmic drive. It’s not the psychedelic, over-the-top circus of Parliament-Funkadelic, but it often has that political slant. It’s not the party funk of the Ohio Players, but it shares the high vocals that take the pressure off the bottom. Dumptaphunk is a whole other school of funk. If you’re under 35, you think you’ve seen funk, but you haven’t. You missed the original Meters, James Brown when he wasn’t a parody, Parliament-Funkadelic when the acid was great, Sly and the Family Stone before he went M.I.A, and Booker T. and the M.G.s before the demise of Stax. Dumpstaphunk is as good as that, and they’re in their prime now. So go hit the Dumpstaphunk show and witness the premiere funk act for the new millenium!
